It's Thanksgiving Day here in the US.
It's an annual tradition in remembrance of the Pilgrims' first successful harvest and celebration in 1621 with the Native Americans who helped them get established.
Millions of Americans have turkeys roasting in their ovens right about now.
Lots of folks traveling to family feasts and friendgivings this holiday, on the road and in the air.
It's a day of giving thanks, gastronomic gluttony and televised parades and sports.
Then tomorrow begins the official Christmas shopping season with Black Friday.
My inbox is literally choked up with enticing sales, but I probably won't bite on any.
After clearing off the dining room table, I hope to lay out all my finished Christmas cards and begin assigning them to recipients on my list.
And as always, have some Art time!
But for now I have a Thanksgiving decor tag to share with you.
I'm honoring a staple of vintage post cards from the early 1900's: the Turkey Trot Ride.
I found these two vintage collage sheet images in my stash from so long ago that I've forgotten where I got them from, but no matter, they are all over the internet in the public domain.
I read up on them and I figure that it was a real thing on farms and in small towns. Farmers moved their raised turkeys to market by driving them like cattle. Those birds grew big and it sounds about right that some kids would try to ride them. I suppose the idea to illustrate that caught on somehow and boy did it ever. Even Santa has a team of turkeys on some old postcards.
Fun Fact: Farming was the number one occupation throught our country's history up until the 1950's. All it would take was for some young illustrator fresh off the farm with memories of this sort of childhood prank to set off an illustration fad. I bet the real thing was fun and funny to watch, too.
Anyway, I cut my tag out of white card stock scrap, then opened my T'Giving scraps box and pulled out the images along with enough small paper scraps to make a background collage. I added a brown Promarker edging and a reinforced tag hole with some orange embroidery thread. Some of my mom's old lace on the bottom and a spattering of green and red rhinestones completed the tag.
The challenge at Tag Tuesday is for Words/Sentiments and my tag has a lot of them..
Here's a close-up so you can read them more easily.
In addition to the Sentiments on the images, I included definitions of "turkey" and "trot", torn out of an old dictionary.
More than a few vintage post card images are just plain weird, but I like using them, if only to showcase the weirdness.
A lot of them are funny, too.
😊
Thank you for visiting me today
and
A Very Happy Thanksgiving
to those who celebrate it.
And Best Wishes for a
Perfectly Lovely Day
to all!

Well you have certainly aced my challenge Aimeslee with this gorgeous tag. Very appropriate for your celebration too and I hope you had a lovely family day. Thanks for joining us at Tag Tuesday this fortnight.
I can't imagine anyone riding a turkey, even if they did get big. They seem so round to fit your legs around and not tall like an ostrich so your legs could dangle. But I bet it would be funny to see. I love your Thanksgiving tag, and hope you had a great holiday. Did you have ham? We went out later on Black Friday and did a few errands. Only one store was crowded. Of course some of those black friday deals are just to tempt you whether you want the product or not. I bought bird seed and dogs toys-whoop-whoop-exciting. But you can't forget the dogs at Christmas. Have a great rest of your weekend. hugs-Erika
