Happy Sunday to all!
Hope everyone had a good week.
It has warmed up here, so much that the bluebonnets, which don't usually bloom until March-April, are already blooming in some areas around Texas. I read an article that said they are confused by this spate of warmth, lol, and it happens occasionally. We call this variation in temps Yo-Yo Weather (think dieting).
😁
This week's post is all about GRUNGE.
I'm guest-hosting at Sunday Postcard Art and that's the theme I chose, mostly because the grunge style of art fascinates me (as opposed to being good at it, which I'm not!).
A deep-dive on Google reveals that it really cannot be described succinctly. In music, it means Nirvana. But in visual art, it means many things. Street graffiti, scribbling, messy, dark smokey edges, layers of peeling paint, splatters, water spots, etc. Tim Holtz's art is often thought of as vintage grunge. There is also clean grunge, which is probably what I create here, given that I am not real comfortable with being messy.
Anyway, I played and created 4 different grungy samples that I think(?) are grungy enough.
And since we are so close to Valentine's Day, that's my subject as well.
What do you think?
Let me know your thoughts about Grunge.
I used Distress Inks to blend out a honey-colored background on 4X6 card, then splattering it with water to get droplet spots, then giving it dark-inked edges. I stamped some flourishes on another piece of card, cut it into a banner, ink-edged it and layered it onto the base. I cut a Spellbinders heart die from red card and some digital grunge hearts paper I printed out from Joyful Heart Designs. I stamped the lips and !Mua!, added the WPlusNine XOXO die cut strip and then added 2 punched hearts at the bottom.

For my second sample, I added a sheet of Marah Johnson designer paper to a 4X6 piece of black card stock. I stamped the man's face from Tim Holtz Artful Artifacts set (coloring him with pencils) and the girl guitarist silhouette from Inkadinkado. Added some washi tapes and then dark-inked the edges all around.

For Sample #3, I used collage medium to cover a 4X6 piece of card with a piece of Craft Consortium Cracked Wood tissue paper, then I applied a thin coat of gesso to it. After that dried, I sprayed it with Dylusions Bubblegum Pink, Peony Bush and Rose Quartz inks. After that dried, I used a Bo Bunny stamp set to stamp the hearts: white pigment ink on the left and red on the right. I then clear heat-embossed the stamping. I also dark-inked the edges.
Next, I cut the top piece out of a scrap of pink checked paper using a Kat Scrappiness clouds border die. I dark-ink edged it but used a white Distress Crayon on the stitched cloud edging to highlight it. I drew three lines for the hanging hearts with an Artist Big Brush pen and glued on the foam hearts from my stash. Lastly, I cut the Lawn Fawn sentiment border out of a scrap of card and glued that on at top.

This fourth sample is my most grungy one, and I kept it unadorned here to show off the grunge.
It has many layers of inks, paints, stain sprays, splatters.
Although you really can no longer see it, the 4X6 card base has the cracked wood tissue paper on it and a layer of gesso. To that I added a layer of burlap die cuts before beginning the inking, spraying, etc. I used DI Abandoned Coral and Candied Apple Spray Stains in addition to the Dylusions spray inks listed above. I also used Tim's splatter brush with white acrylic ink for some splatters and I dark-ink edged all around by ink-blending and also using/smudging a dark grey Big Brush pen. I sealed this with Liquitex Matte Varnish because of all the water-reactive inks used.
To me, this last one is Grunge for sure. NOT sure that I really want to devote the time and energy a lot to achieving this look, though. For occasional use only.
I mean, I'm slow enough as it is, lol.

Well, I'll call it quits for this post.
But I will be doing an extra post on Valentine's Day to share some art I made for it, in addition to my regular Sunday postings.
Thanks very much for visiting me today and I hope to see you Friday!

girl, i think you NAILED IT. these are gorgeous grunge creations. I'm glad you did a little research. i just took a guess at what the grunge theme should be and i think the definitions you found totally fit. thanks for this great challenge and for your beautiful art! enjoy your early spring flowers. hopefully another freeze won't kill them off. that happens here a lot but we are still dealing with unseasonably cold temps in the 20s and 30s... xo
I think I do a lot of grunge because I seem to make everything messy-ha ha. I think the last piece of yours is definitely a grungy background. Nice job grudging it out. And the inside of your heart is quite grungy too. I love the big heart die cut though. That is cool. And I forgot about that TH face stamps. I like how you colored it. I should dig mine out. After my cleaning all my TH stamps are together and organized-grin. And wow, flowers blooming already. I am jealous. We're in a nice day-snow day-nice day-snow day pattern right now and flowers seem like they'll be months away. Hope your yo-yo weather straightens itself out. Have a great week ahead. hugs-Erika
A fun challenge and beautiful pictures all. I don't know if my definition of Grunge is the same as yours, but I had a good time anyway Thanks.
